Jess turned from the oven just in time to see Ember plunge both front paws straight into the bowl beside the mixing stand. Flour burst into the air like a tiny snowstorm.
“Ember,” Jess warned.
The kitten ignored her.
Behind the counter the espresso machine hissed softly, as if sharing Jess’s disapproval.
From the windowsill, Maestro flicked his tail. “Wonderful,” he said dryly. “Now we’re baking kittens.”
Jess sighed and scooped Ember up before she could escalate the situation. “You’re supposed to be helping,” she told the kitten.
Ember blinked up at her with wide golden eyes and promptly sneezed. A perfect puff of flour burst from her nose.
From the café doorway Daphne burst out laughing as she set down a crate of milk.
“Jess,” she said, “your kitten looks like she fell into snow.”
“Try flour.” Jess brushed the powder from Ember’s paws and set her beside the register.
The kitten sat primly. For approximately three seconds. Then her tiny ears lifted. Her whiskers twitched. Slowly, Ember turned toward the large café window that faced Main Street.
Jess followed the movement, always hyper-aware of Ember’s ability to notice things.
Outside, Good Fortune was just waking up. Across the street the lights flickered on in the Book Nook. Lavenders Lotions and Potions also had lights on. A delivery truck rattled toward Liz’s diner. Everything looked perfectly ordinary.
Except Ember.
The kitten rose to her feet. Her tail fluffed slightly. She made a low, uncertain chirp.
Maestro jumped down from the windowsill and landed beside her.
“That,” he said thoughtfully, “is new.”
Jess frowned. “What is?”
But Ember wasn’t paying attention to either of them. She was staring across the street like she’d spotted something no one else could see.
For a moment the café felt strangely quiet.
Then the door burst open.
Amy rushed inside, slightly out of breath. “Jess,” she said urgently and pointed down Main Street. “You’d better come quick.”
