My name is Patience O'Reilly, and I grant wishes.
Not the coin-in-a-fountain, sparkles-and-glitter kind. Real wishes. Deep, soul-rooted ones that tug at the seams of a person's life. I'm a white witch, which means I don't deal in curses or hexes or dramatic magical displays. My work is quiet. Gentle. Powerful.
And yes—it comes with rules.
Right now, my black terrier familiar Lucky is convinced he's both smarter and more stylish than I am. He can talk, though only I can hear him, and his voice is tight with disapproval as I grab my bag from the hallway hook.
"That's not how wishes work. We have a plan!"
"Yes, I know," I murmur, "but she's desperate."
"Everyone is desperate to have their wish granted."
I sigh, pausing at the door. "That's true. But Marie... Marie's different."
"You can't change your mind this way. It isn't how wishes are done."
I close my eyes and breathe deeply. Lucky's right—I do have procedures. Used to be a private investigator before I discovered my true calling, so I understand the importance of following protocol. But sometimes a witch has to put her foot down.
"After all this time, I think I know what's possible."
"'Possible' doesn't factor into this."
I open the door and let the warm breeze spill into the cottage. "Well, I think it does. I'm going to hear her out. If the wish doesn't align, I'll feel that and we can move on."
"You're being stubborn."
"Are you coming or not?"
Lucky scampers out the door just as it begins to swing shut. He shoots me a look over his shoulder.
"Not funny. You almost got my tail."
I try not to laugh as I hold the door open wider. "Then keep up, boss."
